Tips for an Environmentally Friendly Event

Many of us are becoming more environmentally conscious and seek to reduce our impact, which is an important step to take but it’s not always easy to see how we can do so. When it comes to events, being eco-friendly isn’t always top of the agenda, however, it is very easy to implement small changes that can make a big difference.

Here at Jaspers Event Hire, we work closely on many different kinds of events, so we have put together a few tips to help improve your consideration of the environment. These ideas can be implemented in almost any kind of event.

While it might not be immediately obvious, the location you choose for your event can have a big impact on your carbon footprint. The best rule of thumb is to stick to destinations that have good public transport links and, if possible, are reachable by walking or cycling.

If this isn’t possible, you can arrange minibus/coaches to take guests from central locations and encourage carpooling to ensure there is minimal waste and minimal carbon output.

If your event requires decorations, there are certain conscious decisions you can make to help reduce the amount of impact you have on the environment. Simple changes such as hiring/borrowing decorations where possible – as opposed to buying things to use once and throwing them away – and using recycled, recyclable products is a good place to start. This means it’s best to steer clear of things like tinsel, ribbon, glitter, confetti, etc.

Recycling – or upcycling – things to decorate your event can add a unique charm to a space and even create a fun preparation activity to get stuck into. You could even involve your guests if it’s appropriate and applicable, and they’re happy to do so, of course.

For things that don’t fall under the above categories, you should look for alternatives that will have the least impact. This means choosing LED lights over traditional lighting, for example.

We have such great technology at our disposal today that it would be a shame not to make the most of it to reduce the impact your event has on the environment. There is so much waste that is created through events that can be avoided by, perhaps, sacrificing style for practicality.

Choose to send out electronic invitations, as opposed to physical ones, and make the materials/resources/presentations of your conference digital – these things can be sent out much more easily and will not create the waste of traditional mediums.

While you may need to lose some of the allure that paper invites and things of the like bring, you can keep track of digital things much easier, which will help when it comes to seeing who has RSVP’d for guestlists. They can also be well-designed and don’t have to look like they were made on Microsoft Paint…

Unless your event takes place frequently, hiring furniture and other equipment is a no-brainer. For starters, you will save yourself money but you will also save some of the environmental impact you have, by reducing your carbon footprint. Hired items are reused very frequently and you can always be sure they will be used effectively before and beyond your event.

What’s more, you can make the most of hiring with crockery, cutlery, and glassware. It’s much better for the environment to use eating/drinking utensils that can be washed and reused rather than using plastic/paper options that have to be thrown away.

Small Changes, Big Difference

The conclusion to all of this is that, through a few small changes, a big reduction can be made to the carbon footprint of an event. There are some small sacrifices that have to be made, which is natural, but there are creative workarounds to help supplement these and ensure your event is a knockout.
